LOW PATHOGENIC AVIAN INFLUENZA IN
WALES
A case of H7N2 low pathogenic Avian influenza has been confirmed in
Corwen, Conwy, North Wales. The outbreak is believed to be amongst 22
Rhode Island Red chickens recently introduced onto a smallholding which
has chickens and ducks.
All movements on and off the premises have been prohibited since 23 May
2007. In addition, a 1km restriction zone is being put in place around
the infected premises. This is in line with the Avian influenza
Directive, which requires a minimum 1km radius for a low pathogenic
restricted zone and Defra’s assessment is that in this case a 1km zone
is proportionate.
A full epidemiological investigation is underway to determine the source
of this outbreak. Animal Health (formerly the State Veterinary Service)
are carrying out inspections on all the infected and suspect premises as
well as tracing all poultry movements and other relevant contacts onto
and off the premises.
The involvement of all chickens and ducks at bird fairs, markets, shows
and other gatherings has been banned in GB until further notice. In
practice this does not include turkeys and geese but Defra are
considering this because it is unlikely that anyone would want to gather
with either of these two species if the gathering of other species of
poultry is banned.
Anyone with poultry should adhere to strict biosecurity and wherever
possible feed and water their birds away from wild birds.
