Mr Kelly, whose Essex family business led the return of traditional bronze turkeys to the Christmas market, has had a life-long interest in rare breeds and says he is honoured by his new role.

He was elected at the Club’s annual general meeting, which took place during the Poultry Club of Great Britain’s national championship show at Stoneleigh, Warwickshire.

Secretary/Treasurer Janice Houghton-Wallace says that Mr Kelly has always been supportive of the Club’s endeavours :

“Looking to the future it is vital to maintain the gene pool particularly as consumers are coming to appreciate more traditional values and Derek has the enormous advantage of being involved in both rare breeds and commercial production.”

His interest began with post-graduate studies in poultry genetics, leading to a career in turkey breeding culminating in the success of the KellyBronze developed from some of the last remaining bronze turkeys in the UK at the time when the modern white breeds totally dominated the market.

“My collection of rare breeds had to go when our commercial hatchery was operating through the year,” says Mr Kelly. “Now we are a seasonal hatchery again we have plans to restock the pens.”
